Sergey Karev - Metal objects @ Exhibition in a private gallery, 2020
SERGEY KAREV
Sergey Karev, an artist from St. Petersburg, creates sculptures made of metal, fusing iron sheets with fire and a press into new symbols that expand the existing iconic field. The choice of the artist's medium is determined, perhaps, by the notorious "truth of the material", which itself participates and influences the result, where the element of chance and an intuitive experimental approach becomes part of the postmodern game.
Combining recognizable organic and mechanistic forms, archaic and actual meanings, the artist reshapes them into fresh semantic configurations, ambiguous for interpretation and meant for meditative contemplation. Art objects come into the world with their own purpose, and their creator serves as a carrier of these ideas.
Sergey Karev was born in Leningrad in 1977.
In 2006 he graduated from the St. Petersburg State Art and Industrial Academy named after A.L. Stieglitz. Member of the Union of Artists of Russia.
